Compared to the planning extending to 2035 and 2050 by Asian nations like China, there is no long-term planning for the future in North America, noted the president of
the CNEC.
“A binational effort is needed, for example, to modernize border crossings—projects that require very close collaboration between both nations to reduce construction and execution timelines,” declared the president of the CNEC.
He announced that next November, through CNEC, Mexico will take the lead of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) for the North America Region, which will enable the creation of a regional plan influenced by the renegotiation of the USMCA in 2025.
“FIDIC is an organization composed of the associations of consulting engineers from Mexico, the United States, and Canada, representing more than 600 thousand highly qualified professionals. This creates a favorable environment for improving physical, digital, and transportation infrastructure, which will facilitate cross-border exchanges and
boost the region’s competitiveness. Currently, this region contributes 28 percent of global GDP and represents an economic bloc 50 percent larger than China and 55 percent larger than the European Union,” emphasized Mr. Solís.
It’s worth noting that Mexico’s participation in FIDIC will also allow the region to attract future industries, such as data server farms, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things,
electric mobility, semiconductors, and others.
He stressed the importance of creating the Digital Transformation and Telecommunications Agency for Mexico, which aims to modernize customs with updated inspection and clearance systems for both imports and exports, as well as the creation of new strategic fiscal zones that will support the nearshoring framework.
“The push for this infrastructure will be a significant driver of investment. We must modernize our national airport system; it needs to be reconfigured. Connectivity with
airports and seaports increases international commercial activity. If we do not have the necessary infrastructure network to streamline the movement of goods and consumer products, we definitely will not see the benefits we are anticipating,” he concluded.
